Your bed is the centerpiece of your room, so you want it to look its best. Everything from decorative pillows to how you lay your top sheet can determine how effectively your bed elevates a room. Your current setup includes the basics you need for a comfortable night’s sleep, but if you want to change the look, there are a few key elements that can help you do so. With a few simple adjustments, your bed (and your room) will look and feel like it was designed by a professional.
Bed Too Firm? Here’s What You Can Do
Do you have luggage, out-of-season clothes, and more items conspicuously stored under your bed? Consider hiding these items with a bed skirt. “Bedskirts, also known as dust ruffles, create a put-together feel while hiding the box spring and anything stored under the bed,” says Vera Peterson, president of Neighborly company Molly Maid. She adds, “It comes in two styles: a wrap-around style that covers the box spring and has a side-hung seat or elastic to secure it to the box spring.” Bedskirts are not only ideal for hiding unsightly box springs, but they also add a sophisticated look to your bed.
No one likes a saggy, clunky mattress (or the look of it). Breathe new life into your bed by adding a mattress topper to the mix. Although not strictly necessary, adding these plush materials can make an old mattress more comfortable or extend the life of a new mattress. “Mattress toppers are perfect for adding a layer of luxury to a basic mattress for comfort and luxury, especially for firm mattresses,” says Malaika Lubega, owner and professional organizer at Huza Home Concepts.
Don’t underestimate the impact of beautiful sheets. The bedding complements the comforter and ties the entire vision together. To prevent wrinkles, place sheets directly from the dryer on the bed (or iron them before lying down). First, lay down the fitting sheet and make sure all four elastic corners are perfectly aligned with the corners of the mattress. Tuck excess fabric under the mattress to ensure the sheets lie flat without wrinkles or bunching.
Flat sheets can have a huge visual impact when placed correctly. Contrary to popular belief, the most aesthetically pleasing way to top sheet is not with the pattern side facing up. “You should check by placing the patterned flat sheet upside down and then folding it right next to the pillow,” says Anna Bauer, organizing expert and owner of Sorted by Anna.
How To Master The Art Of The Cozy Bed
If the corners of your flat sheets are often difficult to handle, consider making hospital corners. The orderly sheet folding style provides uniform results every time and keeps the top sheet crisp and clean.
Consider your own personal design aesthetic when deciding which topper to place on your bed. Whichever you choose, make sure the topper drapes evenly over the sides of the bed and is folded so that the pleats lie directly in front of the pillow.
“While a comforter is a fluffy bed cover made from synthetic materials, a comforter is made up of three layers: a decorative top layer, a batting layer, and a backing fabric,” says Peterson. A comforter looks similar to a comforter on the outside, but consists of two parts. That is, the insert and the cover are removable and generally washable.
If you want your bed to look like a fluffy cloud, a duvet or blanket might be the right bedding solution. Duvets give a soft, layered feel to your bed, but are also great for providing warmth as well as aesthetics. “Quilts are best used during colder months or seasons to add warmth and coziness,” says Lubega.
How To Make A Mattress Softer If It’s Too Firm
Do you want your bed to really stand out? Consider choosing a comforter instead of a comforter or duvet. “Quilts are made up of three layers: a top layer of decorative fabric, a center layer of batting, and a backing fabric,” says Peterson. “They are often hand-stitched or machine-stitched to create unique, decorative patterns on the surface.” The only downside to blankets is that they don’t provide much warmth during the colder months. Therefore, it is best to pair the topper with a comforter or blanket.
Pillows are an opportunity to enhance the look of your sleeping space. If you prefer a laid-back aesthetic, try laying four standard pillows vertically (or horizontally for a classy, hotel-style look) without any decorative elements. Or, get creative and layer shams, accents, and lumbar pillows on your bed in a way that suits your design style. However, as a general rule, standard sleeping pillows should always be placed against the headboard with a layer of shams and decorative elements on the front.
However you choose to arrange your pillows, make sure the openings are facing inward and towards each other, so no bare pillows are visible. You should also fluff your pillows to give them a magazine-inspired look. “Normally on a bed, I like my pillows to be fluffy and upright, so I don’t do karate chops,” says Lauren Robbins of Lauren Robbins Interiors. Instead, throw the pillow on a hard surface. “This movement usually has just the right amount of force to revitalize the filling for a perfectly shaped pillow,” she says.
The final element is adding a blanket, which can be used to give the bed more dimension and add warmth. “Ultimately, how you arrange the blankets on your bed is up to you and what you find visually appealing and comfortable,” says Peterson. But there are some common methods you can try.
