Reviving Your Kitchen Cabinets – If you’re thinking of painting your kitchen cabinets, you’ve come to the right place! I’m sharing every single step into a brand new space!
While the actual priming and painting only took three days (can you say marathon painting?), the kitchen cabinets will also need to be refreshed
Reviving Your Kitchen Cabinets
One more day to put everything together. I spent all day Friday preparing, Saturday, Sunday and Monday I primed and painted, and Tuesday I put it all back together, a total of five days.

I share my experience step by step. Feel free to skim if you don’t need that much detail.

I used masking tape to hold it in place. I also covered the stove and sink but was able to remove them when needed. Then I just put it back.
Since this product is also a gloss, it will remove the shine from any surface you use it on. Gloves are recommended. I sprayed it directly onto my Scotch Brite sponge and cleaned the cabinets with it. I had to use the abrasive side for stubborn areas. I started with my cabinet boxes.
Kitchen Refresh: How To Give New Life To Old Cabinets
The cabinet on the right almost looks like it has been sanded. I also scraped off the old felt bumpers with a razor blade. (I think they were dry rot anyway.)
A four-inch roller and an extra two-pack of smooth rollers (these are from Lowes and labeled “Doors and Cabinets”).
Brush – I prefer to use the aPurdy 2.5″ angled brush, but I already had this brand new brush that works for priming. (I use Purdy for coloring.)
Gloves (not shown) I bought a 25 pack of blue nitrile gloves and tried to always wear them to save on cleanup.
How To Design A Timeless, Classic Kitchen
Be sure to gently apply the primer to the edges so that the primer only covers the top surface and does not drip down the sides:
Just one coat of primer should do the trick, unless your cabinets are really dark, in which case I’d recommend applying another coat of primer once the first coat is dry before continuing.
Get ready for the front now! It is also easier to roll the roller around the sides when the cabinet doors are separated.
Did I mention I drew a marathon? Fortunately, the primer dries very quickly. As the inside of my cabinet box dried for a few hours, I started painting! (Not the doors yet, but the boxes were ready!)

Interior enamel paint with a satin finish (I used Behr’s Cottage White) ** This is a latex paint, but the enamel gives it a durable, easy-to-clean finish.
**I didn’t get the paint with a built-in primer because I primed it separately, but I would recommend using the paint with a primer for even better coverage since I had to touch up a few areas.
A four-inch roller and an extra two-pack of smooth rollers (these are from Lowes and listed under “Doors and Cabinets”).
Nitrile gloves (again, if you can save on cleanup…plus, I used my fingers to clean up, so they were covered in paint!)

One coat of primer and two coats of paint perfectly cover rolled areas. Brushed areas can benefit from even better coverage with a primer.
At this point, I still had to paint the inside of the cabinet I was planning to put glass doors on, replace those door panels with glass, add a shelf above the window, install crown molding above the cabinets, and add a faceplate to our large island. .
It’s amazing what a difference paint can make! The photo below is two years after I painted these cabinets and they are still going strong:
I’ve been putting this project off for far too long. My hardest decision was what paint to use. You know I’m a huge fan of chalk paint and this seemed so much easier when the chalk paint was “no prep”. However, I chose Latex Enamel with a Satin finish and couldn’t be happier. The finish is so smooth and the enamel makes it durable and easy to clean. The preparation required was well worth the end result, and there was no need to wax or seal the paint afterwards as would have been required with chalk paint. This will make it so easy to fix. Also, you really want a smooth surface free of grease and grime to paint on!
