Creating Inviting Guest Suites – With the holiday season upon us, many of you will have out-of-town guests spending the night. To help your visitors feel comfortable, here are eight essentials for creating an inviting guest room.
Make sure the pillow and mattress are comfortable. You don’t want your guests to wake up the next day from a bad night’s sleep. A memory foam mattress pad can make the hardest bed even more comfortable. Offer two types of pillows if possible. One soft and the other a little hard, as everyone has different preferences.
Creating Inviting Guest Suites
You’d think this should go without saying but I’ve had the experience of staying in a guest room with sheets left over from a previous guest. It was gross and uncomfortable to say the least. Everyone appreciates crawling into a clean bed at the end of the day.
How To Create An In Law Suite In Your New Home
Place some hangers in the closet to hang your guest’s clothes. A couple of empty drawers are also good. Especially, for those staying multiple nights.
If you have decorative pillows on the bed, have a place to store your guest; such as a bench or basket at the foot of the bed. This will prevent the pillows from ending up on the floor. A bench can also double as a luggage rack.
A side table will provide a place for your guests to charge their phones and keep their jewelry and other small items.
Consider some hooks on the wall or behind the door to hang items like purses, coats, and towels.
How To Organize & Design A Home Office/guest Bedroom
Personal touches are thoughtful gestures that make your guests feel welcome. Here are some to consider. A welcome basket with fresh flowers, toiletries and/or favorite snack, reading materials. A couple of water bottles, so your guests don’t have to walk to the kitchen in the middle of the night if they get thirsty.
It’s also helpful to keep towels in the room for your guests so they don’t have to fumble for them or visit you while you’re getting ready to shower. To create an inviting guest bedroom for your company? This is one of my favorite things; give
Fresh sheets, a comfortable comforter, new pillows, and throw blankets make the guest bedroom very inviting.
I have tried many different bedding sets over the years, but my favorite is definitely from Schweitzer Linen.
Designer Guest Bedroom Ideas And Essentials
Here, I’ve decorated our guest bedroom with Seersucker bedding from Schweitzer Linens at our home in coastal Maine. You can also enjoy this small cottage guest bedroom, vintage and fun.
Today, I’ll walk you through the guest bedroom at our home in Vermont as I freshen it up for spring.
How do you prepare your bedroom for guests? Today, I started with this bedside table by adding a few essentials:
T.J Max just moved to our town in Vermont! This is a huge deal for us, since we don’t have any big box stores nearby.

So, I’ve never been able to easily run out to buy fresh towels, pillows, sheets, housewares, etc… can you believe it?
To keep your guests comfortable, add fresh bedding with a soft, cozy comforter. Here, I added Schweitzer Linen’s gifted Fiore collection to our guest bedroom. I love the beautiful soft blue and taupe colors for spring.
I also love adding a breakfast tray, like the one I found here at Thiefing with the Gulls.
You can add candles, coffee or tea cups, flowers, magazines and/or books to the breakfast tray, making your guests feel more comfortable in your home.
How To Style The Perfect Guest Bedroom
My husband just came back from the grocery store with these orange tulips, so I added them to an old glass jar and displayed them on a breakfast tray with a vintage tea set and brass candlestick.
Oh my god, it started snowing like crazy here, and I just heard we are now expecting 1″- 4″…
Oh boy, I admit I wasn’t too excited to see the snow, but waking up to it in the morning was priceless! This was one of the top reasons we chose to move to Vermont.
And, of course, I had to run out with my beautiful pink tulips and take thousands of photos…

Adding a throw blanket or quilt at the foot of the bed is always a good idea, especially if one is looking for a little warmth or has had a sudden snowfall like we just had.
There may be a bench, ottoman or luggage rack under the bed for guests to leave their personal belongings. You can also store extra blankets, pillows and towels there.
I’m going to keep the orange tulips from being floppy, though. See how I do that in the How a Penny Can Keep Tulips From Dropping post.
Guest Bedroom Ideas
Truth be told, here in Vermont we have two guest bedrooms that don’t get much love. They are often closed in winter to conserve heat.
So I think this will be the year! I’m looking to jazz up these two guest bedroom and bathroom suite areas with some blue paint and a fabulous wallpaper pattern.
This guest bedroom looks so different today! See more in the post, 3 Wallpaper Bedroom Designs Symbolic of a Cozy Vermont Inn.

Your guests may not be fully aware of the layout of your home, and you want them to be comfortable if they wake up in the middle of the night. Strategically placed plug-in motion sensor step-lights will add glare-free lighting to any steps and hallways leading to the bathroom and kitchen. Also, place in the guest bath as a night light. For the bedroom, use warm colored LED amber/golden toned lighting instead of bright white so it doesn’t disrupt the sleep cycle. – Lux lighting design
2) Welcome your friends into a warm and inviting guest bedroom by choosing the perfect color temperature for your lights.
Not sure which color temperature to choose? Try lights at 3000K or 4000K for a soft, relaxing atmosphere. You can also use smart bulbs to let your guests set the mood this holiday season. – Sunco Lighting
Guest Room Essentials {to Make Guests Feel At Home}
Lighting in most guest bedrooms can be a single back-lit mismatched lamp, a single overhead fixture, or perhaps a light attached to a ceiling fan. A great guest room decorating idea is adding additional light sources such as floor lamps, accent lights, and reading lamps to provide plenty of light when they need it. You can also provide dimmers when you need to decompress. Remember, your guests start and end their days in that room – don’t make the mistake of assuming they’re navigating unfamiliar surroundings and might be a little stressed. – Dominion Light
Bedside lighting such as table lamps, sconces, wall lamps and pendants can add security and comfort to your guest bedroom. The convenient placement of this light means your guests will make their way through a dark, unfamiliar bedroom in the middle of the night without any tipping. – Everlights
Make your guests cozy and comfortable by providing plenty of extra throw blankets. A decorative basket filled with different weights of soft, colorful blankets will look beautiful in a corner and give your guests a warm welcome. – Lomination
Freshening up the guest bedroom is a must as we head into the holiday season. A chunky knit throw in a neutral color can do wonders to make a bedroom feel cozy. Making sure your guests enjoy a comfortable Coop Original or Eden pillow means they get a guaranteed 8 hours of sleep. And stocking your guest bedroom with great literature is another way you can help your guests relax (think: The Water Dancer, Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre). – Anger
