Wind turbines use the movement of wind to turn a shaft connected to a generator, creating electricity. The size of the turbine and the wind speed determine how much electricity it will generate. Typical residential air systems have power ratings from 5 to 30 kW. To be a suitable candidate for a wind system, a homeowner must own at least one acre of land and live in an area with an average annual wind speed of at least 10 miles per hour. Turbine tower height should be selected based on the height of nearby wind obstructions such as buildings or vegetation and is typically 60 to 140 feet tall.
