Here’s the kicker for small cracks and dents, though: if you’re just painting a small area you probably can’t get away with painting it unless it’s a recent paint job. Paint fades over time from the sun, air, dust, and dirt that adheres to it. We recommend painting the entire wall up to the corners so that it blends smoothly.
How Drywall Cracks Form Unless your house or drywall is new, most cracks come from age, usually around the seams where drywall panels meet. If you think of drywall as a series of large panels held together with drywall mud and tape, you will never notice the seams because the mud and tape hide them completely. But new homes may show cracks due to improperly installed drywall. A home inspector knows to look for these cracks and dents or movement in the walls near the cracks – usually around windows, doors, entryways and corners. It is a sign that the foundation is settling or that interior walls are under some kind of stress.

You can prevent drywall cracks by controlling moisture, re-taping cracks as they appear, and not letting them get out of control.
Using mesh drywall tape is one of the easiest ways to repair cracks or repair drywall cracks. The tricky part with drywall tape is getting a very thin layer of drywall compound to sit over. This can be difficult for beginners to do, but you can always put it down.
Repairing large holes – like someone falling through a wall – goes beyond repairing cracks. In these cases, it is necessary to introduce a new drywall or plaster surface. An experienced contractor will fill it and use mesh tape to attach it to the drywall joint. We can refer you to some experienced contractors if necessary.
Plaster walls are more complicated because the surface of the wall and the wood or metal strips underneath can split, requiring you to cut out a large part of the wall to properly repair it. If you’ve recently installed home insulation, you probably have dozens of golf ball-sized holes in your walls. The expanding chalk is available at contractor supply stores, well-stocked home centers and hardware stores. For gaps and joints larger than 1/4 in. wide, insert a foam backing rod to support the caulk. You want the rod to fit tightly in the joint, so buy it one size larger than the gap.
A word of advice: Keep the urethane caulk off your hands and bare clothing; it’s the stickiest stuff you’ll ever touch. Use disposable gloves when machining the joints. If you get some on your skin, wipe it off quickly with a thinner, damp cloth.
Use a foam backing rod into the gap with your fingers. Set the rod 1/4 in. below the surface of the concrete. You can also repair mortar joints yourself.
Fill the crack with urethane caulk, similar to what you would use for driveway caulk. It works perfectly as a concrete expansion sealant. Snip the opening of the tube at a 30-degree angle, making the opening the same size as your gap. Use a smooth, balanced motion, filling the crack with the cream, hitting it if it’s against the house. Spread the caulk in wide joints with the back of an old spoon. Wipe the spoon clean as needed with a rag and mineral spirits.

For wood, fiber composite, or cementitious siding, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for spacing. All siding needs edge gaps where siding meets trim pieces, as well as drip caps, water boards, and hardscaping and landscaping elements.
